Featherstone Lions U16’s to NEWS become the first community club ever to visit Serbia

Featherstone Lions U16’s are one step closer to becoming the first U16’s community club ever to visit Serbia thanks to all their sponsors and Serbia RL. The five-day tour, which is scheduled from 6th11th August, will see the under 16’s team play two games against mixed ages (U16 and U18’s), join in with training sessions, complete with training sessions with a Belgrade development team and support the continued development of Rugby League across the world. Building on an existing association, as a Lions coach, Darren Fisher, is also the Serbian men’s national team coach, the team hopes to show how sport can create connections and lasting memories for young people that extend well beyond the pitch. Serbia tour sponsors are:
➢ Carrboard
➢ J Middleton & Son
➢ Lowery Recruitment
➢ Kath Knight & Callum Butterworth
➢ Supreme Finishes
➢ Richard Colley Roofing Ltd
➢ D&M Roofing Contractors & Lead Specialistst.

EXCITING NEWS FROM THE COMMITTEE

A unanimous decision has been made by the Committee to invest in Sky Sport for the club. This is an exciting opportunity to welcome members and non-members to our club house to enjoy super league and football games over the next 12 months. We hope you feel this to be a welcome addition to Featherstone Lions and will hopefully become a popular venue to socialise and enjoy a beer with family and friends. Watch this space for a live date soon! The club is also investing time and money into its pitches for future players by having regular spiking to try and help with drainage during rainy seasons. We all agree we need to play on our pitches, and this has been a problem for far too long.

U14’S MOVE UP TO DIVISION 2

Our established U14 team were last seasons double cup winners and joint league winners in division 3. The band of brothers are looking forward to getting stuck in this season playing against some strong opponents. They have trained hard all winter and as Daz mentioned they have had a slow start to the season due to weather conditions but played their first league game against rivals Knottingley Mustangs with a 4-4 draw. We are looking forward to seeing what this season brings for the boys. We also have a couple of new players to the U14 team Sonny and Caleb who have been training for some time and now playing in the new season. Great to have them join the Lions family.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Do you have a trade or handy with DIY/Maintenance? We need help with general maintenance at the club during the season. If you can offer some time, please contact our Volunteer Groundsman Dave Midgely on 07711215737

FUNDRAISING

You may have noticed we have a 100 square scratch card on the bar to help fund the replacement fire doors. We are also wanting to update some toilet and shower facilities which this will also help with. There will be no club raffle in April but would appreciate your support to help fill this card. If every visitor/player/parent bought just one square, we would have this full in no time. Please support the club if you can, subs don’t cover all maintenance unfortunately. £5 per square, you could be the lucky winner of £100 cash prize! You can pay by card! Drawn as soon as it is full! We can’t do this without your support! Do you have any fundraising ideas, what type of events would you like to see? Please contact Louise Harrison – Events Coordinator with your ideas by email fevlionsevents@gmail.com or message 07793600315 , I am on Whatsapp or text.

THANKYOU

A big thank you to Barkers Landscapes for providing new turf for our main pitch. We haven’t been on yet but our groundsman Dave Midgley with the support of Barkers Landscapes the pitch is in a great condition ready for summer rugby. We would also like to express our gratitude to Greg Lawrence (U14 parent) for his continued support in cutting the hedges so our supporters can stand and watch on the side lines.

On our Junior section
Summer rugby is here though you wouldn’t think it with some really bad weather and reverse fixtures we haven’t had the best start to 2024. However, it hasn’t affected our teams throughout the club and them enjoying being back in the mix with smiles on faces and a ball in hand. Well done everyone throughout. I can’t wait to see those results!

U16 SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS

Proud moment for our U16’s scholarship players, playing against each other on Thursday 20th March, Wakefield Trinity V Bradford Bulls. Playing for Wakefield – Lewis Pavier, Daniel Hetherington and Zak Clegg. Zak scored his first try in the game as a Wakefield Scholar and playing for Bradford – Dylan Garbett, who also scored his first try as a Bradford scholar. What a fantastic achievement by all. We also have another U16 player Freddie Frankland who is playing for St Helens in the 2nd round of trials for the England Community Lions, we can’t wait to hear of the progress of all these Featherstone Lions lads! Keep up the amazing work!

Our newest team, the u10s now have 10 players and are building nicely.  Were still looking for new players.
